What is Joomla! CMS?

Joomla! is a content management system that's free to use and completely open source. It allows users to write content, place images and much more without using code.

Joomla! is a very complete system from the get go.
It supports multilingual sites without a hassle and comes with a lot of functionalities from the start, such as writing and sending mass mail from within the website and having full user control.
Next to that a lot of SEO options and social media links have been built-in as standard.

Do you have any specific demands next to the standard functionalities? Joomla! has a big library of extensions to add to your website.

Open source

Because Joomla! gives full openness of her code, one can create custom solutions to integrate into the platform.
This resulted in a huge community that helps developing themes and plugins. There's even a very dedicated Dutch community, as well as other languages, that actively provides translations for plugins and documentation.

Custom extensions can be updated directly from Github, without having to upload to the Joomla! Extension Directory.

Joomla! 4

The next, big, new version of Joomla! CMS is expected at the end of 2019. This version will have improved and more extensive functionalities.
The overall installation process will be faster.
The user panel on both front-end and back-end will get an upgrade to provide a whole new experience. The back-end will get loads of improved and more extensive functionalities like:

  • Mass mail templates to write and design newsletters you can send to large groups of users that are signed up to your website and or newsletter.
  • A completely rebuilt media manager tool to store your images nearly and even edit images in it.
  • Built-in publication tool to publish articles more advanced and to your own insight.
  • Full control over accessibility of your content on other websites or apps.

Does your website run on an older version of Joomla! and would you like to upgrade to Joomla! 4? Indeks Solutions will gladly help you realize that.

When to pick Joomla! CMS

A Joomla! website is very versatile and can be used for a small personal blog, but from the initial installation it's also entirely suitable for large company portals with large numbers of visitors and users.

This CMS offers the possibility to add modules anywhere in the template, so that you're not dependent on the location your template has reserved for modules. This makes it easy to move certain information or modules within the same page.

Choosing a Joomla! website depends on your wishes

Developing a Joomla! website usually takes more time than a WordPress website, but less than a fully custom website without a CMS. Indeks Solutions will advise you which is the right choice for your website.

Do you want visitors who come to your website to log in to your online platform to be able to offer them more functionalities? Then Joomla! offers the most complete user control solution from the installation.

In addition to controlling your users, Joomla! also has the possibility to email your users in bulk directly from the website. This means you do not need a separate program for newsletters.

Do you expect to make structural changes to the website after the initial set-up, without having to change the theme or making rigorous changes? Your Joomla! website's prepared for that. It's always possible to move entire modules to a completely different location within the website.

Are you planning to support multiple languages on your website now or in the future? Then Joomla! is very suitable. Joomla! supports more than 70 languages, all of which are regularly updated and can be set during the installation, but can also be easily expanded later.

Joomla! vs. WordPress

The world's best-known content management system is WordPress and that also has nearly twice as many users as Joomla!. However, this doesn't mean that Joomla! is a small player. In fact: more than 2.5 million active websites run on Joomla!.

Although WordPress is the largest and most well-known, Joomla! still wins many high prizes, often of which the best free CMS prize (CMS Critic Awards).

There is no clear answer to the question: 'which CMS is the best?'

Who's Joomla! for?

Although they differ enormously in terms of structure in the back-end, Joomla! and WordPress are both equally easy to learn for a new user.

If you are starting a website for the first time and you have no experience with a content management system, it does not matter which system you choose.
However, do you already have experience with one of the two? Then the transition between the two is difficult. Almost everything is in a different place and they use different names for their applications.

One can compare the difference in user experience with the difference between an Android smartphone and an iOS smartphone (iPhone).

Although the real answer to the question for whom this CMS is suitable is more complicated, we would recommend Joomla! for:

  • Community pages
    • Schools, communities, (sports) clubs
  • Company portals and intranets
    • Governments, SMEs
  • News websites or magazines

WordPress website

The world's most known content management system (CMS) is WordPress, with over 34% of all websites on the web running on this CMS.

It's a system that's very easy to learn and has a library with loads of plugins that offer extra functionalities to add to your website.

How to have a Joomla! website made in 5 steps

  • Investigate the purpose and desired options of your website.
  • Sketch where all the elements and functionalities will be placed on your website.
  • Developing the website and adding the textual content, SEO, photography and other corporate identity elements.
  • Test your website extensively on different screen sizes and operating systems.
  • Finally, update the website to resolve any issues.

Developing a Joomla! website is a process that, when done correctly, forms a solid basis for now and in the future.

Although there are a lot of materials, such as text and images as content for the pages, that must be collected, the purpose of the website and the technical capabilities of the website must also be determined in advance.

Start off by compiling a list of everything your Joomla! website needs. You can do this by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Why do I want to have a Joomla! website made now?
  • What's my company's purpose?
  • What should users be able to do on my website?
  • Do I already have a domain name? If not: is my desired domain name still available?
  • Do I also want to use this domain name for email addresses?
  • Am I going to send out newsletters from my Joomla! website?
  • Do I have social media channels for my company, product or service? Or do I want to create any?
  • Will I regularly write blog posts or news items for my website visitors?
  • What's my budget for my new website?

As soon as it is clear what the purpose of your website is and what the website should be able to do for you and your visitors, you will want to set out which functionalities the website must contain.

What pages do you think you need?

Most websites have a contact page, about us page, terms and conditions page, a privacy statement and a page with an article archive for posts like your latest news. Of course, countless other pages are also possible.

What functionalities does your Joomla! website need to have?

On both websites with or without a contact page you will often find a contact form to offer visitors the possibility to send a message directly to the owner of the website. You determine what information the visitor must enter before the message can be sent.

You may also want to allow users to leave a comment directly under news or blog posts on your website. In that case it's useful that users can log in and register to leave that comment. That way you can also fully control what messages are posted and by whom.

In addition to messages posted by your visitors, you can use a Joomla! website to send messages from your website to visitors who have registered. Joomla! has a built-in function for creating and sending newsletters to user groups that are registered on the website.
When you send newsletters you must inform your users of their rights with regard to the general data protection regulation (GDPR).

How do you want to guide your visitors through your Joomla! website?

The information and the quantity thereof which a visitor receives when loading your website, determines how long the visitor will stay. The clearer and faster you can communicate your goal or proposal to your visitor, the longer that visitor will stay on your page.
A guideline you can use, is everything the visitor sees and reads within 10 seconds.

Also remember that the information someone can read in a short amount of time, is different on any screen size. It may therefore be desirable to follow a different strategy for the website on mobile, tablet of desktop.

If you have any doubts about how you want to transfer your information or seek interaction with your user, Indeks Solutions is happy to help you create a strong foundation for your website. We have many years of experience in the field of web development and web design. Together with you we'll develop the best solution for your target audience.

You can rely on a strong basis. The practical issues such as research and concept development were discussed previously. Now you can start developing the website and fill it with content.

Corporate identity

To make a recognizable website, you design it according to your brand's style. Also known as corporate identity. The corporate identity is often determined well before a website is being developed. The website can now be added as an element of your corporate identity.

Does your company or brand not have a corporate identity yet or would you like to have yours updated? Our designer gladly creates a new corporate identity for you.

Photography

Placing pictures on your website is an extra way to be found in Google.

Before you start selecting existing photos or have new photos taken for the website, you'll first have to make a plan. Decide where you want to use which photos and which composition the photos should contain.
To have your photos match the website, ensure that they are in line with your corporate identity. It is customary to document guidelines for photography in the corporate identity.

Textual content

In addition to the visual layout of the website, the textual part is also formatted.

A rule of thumb to adhere to is at least 300 words per page and at least 900 words for pages that contain the most important and relevant information about your brand, product or service. Also known as cornerstone content.
If you have multiple pages with less than 300 words, try to merge these pages.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

Showing up on the first pages of search engines, such as Google and Bing, requires an SEO strategy based on research results after conducting a thorough analysis of competitors that already score well. That is, however, only part of your search engine score. Your business strategy, product and service, as well as frequently promoting your website will also matter and should be part of your SEO strategy.

Reflect words you wish to be found on in search results, in your text. Words and sentences used by competitors in search engines are already successful. It'd be good practice to use these as inspiration for your own texts.

Do you already have your own website, but are you not satisfied with your search results in search engines? Contact Indeks Solutions. We'll gladly provide you with advice to get higher in search results.

Once your website's filled with content, it will have to be tested on at least all current screen formats and a few much used older formats.

You test whether the text is legible and whether the ratios text to screen and text to whitespace transmits the information you wish to transfer well. Also check all links, buttons and images.

Indeks Solutions tests your website in the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Edge on desktop. On mobile devices we test the functionality in the Samsung standard internet browser, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome.

The goal is to build a Joomla! website in one go, but in practice there'll always be something that needs to be changed. It's not inconceivable that even after a good concept design and a tight work plan, the website still needs to be a little bit different. The website's now tangible and you might come across something you'd like to have changed. That's why we offer revisions. You provide us a list containing every little detail you'd like to see changed. Changes even as small as removing a word or adding a shadow to a button. We'll make sure to edit every detail after the list is finished.

After completing these 5 steps to make a Joomla! website, you'll have a website or webshop that's ready to serve your product or service. Although developments in the World Wide Web are ever ongoing, as well as maintaining your Joomla! website, Indeks Solutions develops future-proof.
