How to have a custom website with database made in 5 steps

You first need to have a good idea of your wishes for your Joomla! Online store. The better your image is and you can write it down, the faster the development will be. You can ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of your webshop?
  • For example, do you want to reach more people?
  • Do you want to increase your sales?
  • Who is your target group?
  • What will you do to ensure that customers come back to your webshop?
  • Are you going to send newsletters?
  • Are you going to use offers?
  • Do you already have a domain name? If not, is the desired domain name still available?
  • Which shipping methods will you use?
  • Which payment methods do you offer your customers?

Now that you have a good and clear picture of your wishes, you can start thinking about what you think you need to make your website a reality.

Which pages do you expect you might need?

As a basis you need an overview of your offered products and/or services and a page per product and/or service where you can find more information. Then there are the legally required pages such as a terms & conditions, privacy statement and cookie policy when cookies are used.
Other pages you can have are an about us page where you can tell more about your company, a contact page and a page about shipping costs.
There are of course many more options, determine what you expect you might need. You can look at your competitors for inspiration.

Which functions do you want on your webshop?

A web store naturally has all sorts of functionalities for selling your products; adding products to an online shopping cart, calculate shipping costs and checking out. It is important to know what information you request from your customer and what options there are for the customer in terms of shipping. Can the customer perhaps pick up the order in the store instead?

Are there products that are closely related to each other and are often sold together? Then it might be a good idea to recommend product A to product B and vice versa.

How do you want to guide your visitors through your online business?

What information will you show when a visitor comes to your homepage? If you have unique sales arguments that distinguish you from your competitors, you can place them on your homepage. You can also recommend specific products that are, for example, new or on sale.

How will you organize your web store? Think of categories and tags that you can attach to products. How do you want visitors to find these products?

If you are not sure what the best approach is for your website, our web designer will be happy to help you on your way to optimum ease of use for you and your visitors.

Now that there is a concept for your Joomla! web store and you know which pages you need and which functionalities should be added to your webshop, it is time to develop the web store.

Corporate identity

Your webshop must be recognizable as part of your business. It is therefore important that the website is designed based on your corporate identity.

Do you not have a corporate identity yet? Our designer is happy to help you with a well-designed corporate identity that fits your company and brand.

Photography

The photos of your products are very important in a webshop. Your visitors will get a good impression of the product that they are going to purchase.
To ensure that the website is fast, you must have good-quality photos which’s file size is small. If you need help with this, we will gladly help you on your way.

Texts

When you write texts for your products and/or services you must take into account what information the customer is looking for. Make sure you have a good description of the product that contains words that your visitor might be looking for.

Products

To be able to add products to your web store, it is important to prepare in advance which products you will add and in which categories they’ll be placed.

If you use a program such as Microsoft Excel to process your products in a well-organized manner, consider using that file to create a CSV file. A CSV file lets you import products in bulk easily and you’ll also have a local backup of all your products.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

In order to actually be able to sell products, it is important that your texts are optimized to be found. This way your potential customers can search by the name of the product or the SKU. Location also plays an important part in this. Sometimes people are searching in the neighborhood directly.

When your new Joomla! webshop is finished, it is first extensively tested in different browsers and on different screen sizes. We look at the functionalities and layout of your website. Is an email sent when something is ordered? Are the prices corrected when something’s on sale? Is there enough whitespace between elements?

Before your webshop goes live, you have the opportunity to use a revision. For example, you may want to have a different text or want to change the color of a button. Make a list of all elements that you see, that way we can quickly adjust them for you.

Maintenance

It is important that you keep your webshop up-to-date. This applies to the plugins and version of Joomla!, but also to your inventory. Do you have new products? Are there products that are no longer being sold?
When you sell many products on your website, you will also have a large database. It is therefore important to regularly backup your database, should anything ever go wrong.
